Troop Librarian James L. has created an electronic spreadsheet containing a listing of all the Troop's Merit Badge Books. Even better, the spreadsheet has links that connect to the current badge requirements, plus additional resources like worksheets and other information. Just click on a Merit Badge's name and the Scout will be taken directly to that badge's listing on the U.S. Scouting Service Project website, one of the best-maintained Scouting sites around. That follows a tradition started by former Troop Librarian James Riccardi, who introduced the feature several years ago.
In addition to building the spreadsheet, James L. researched the current edition of each Merit Badge book, then sorted through dozens of books in the Troop library, removing outdated books -- some going back to the 1960s! He calculated the cost of bringing the entire library up to date, put out a call to other Scouts to donate their used books, then made a request to the Troop Committee for funds to complete the library's Eagle-required collection.
The result? The Troop has current books for every Eagle-required badge for the first time in memory, and our Scoutmaster has a supply of "historical" Merit Badge books to give as prizes and Honor Scout gifts.
The Troop Library Spreadsheet is available in the Forms and Resources section of the Troop website; it can also be download directly from here.
